regional identity of the greek yogurt avert

Regional identity:

Regional identity is what you can learn from the clip when looking at the scenery or the characters.

From the greek yogurt avert you can see a variety of features used in the scenery or about the person that tells you where the advert is set.
For examples: The old fashion buildings. Pathways/dirt tracks used as roads. Greek language. Background music using greek theme tunes. Clothes are old fashion/no designer fabrics. Characters and their way of life by using traditional ways. The child has spear time which he spends out in the village looking after his cow because their is no tv or play station. The boy is allowed to be away from the house where his mum can not see him, without getting into any trouble and he seems to be only 9 years old. Mum stays at home looking after the children and cleans the house, we assume dad is at work providing for the family. Traditional way of cleaning the mat/carpet by beating it because there is no hoover. Botcher preparing to kill the cow where everyone can see, with his sharpened knifes to get the meat, there is no factories to do it for you. The little boy stops him and is allowed to just take the cow with no fret from the botcher. Greek tanned skin. Peaceful life and calm life because not many people. Horses/donkeys used for transport.

All these factors lead you to think the clip is showing you the traditional greek way of life, its rural and makes you want to live the same simple life. However at the end of the clip the telephone rings this shows and makes us as a viewer believe that the clip is set in modern days but you can still have the rural greek life with the greek yogurt.

Shot types:

shot types are a variety of different camera angles used for a specific moment in a clip.

The shots used in the total greek yogurt advert are: Establishing shot to show where the location will be during this scene of the clip, in this case its the filed.
Master shot which shows where the action will happen but it limits the amount of action you are allowed to see.
Close ups are used to show important moment and to show the viewers important moment. A close up also helps the viewer get to know the characters and shows their reaction in detail. In this clip a close up was used on the main object of this clip which was the total greek yogurt.

Medium close ups show the characters from the chest to the head, allowing you to see the reaction of the character but also some of the scenery.
Long shots are used to show the whole person from head to toe, this shot was used when the botcher was sharpening his knifes to kill the cow.

Extreme long shot show the area the character/characters are in, this shot was used when the boy was running back to the house to tell his mum the cow had gone and also when he asked the man what way the cow had gone.

The shot types are used to show further regional identity. You can see this because many close up shots highlight a important moment, that shows the clip is set in a rural greek, country, village. A good example of this is the close up used on the little boys face. This shows his tanned skin, dark hair and dark eyes. We can clearly infer that he is greek. This supported through out the clip with many other shots to lead you to thinking the clip is tradition greek life.

Sounds:

There are different types of sounds used in media. These are: diegetic: any sound within the story line which can be on set or off, non-diegetic: sound effects put into the story line to create a certain mood or effect, synchronous: sounds that occur on screen and asynchronous: sounds that occur off screen.

The diegetic sounds where the bell being rung, the beating of the mat and the botcher sharpening his knifes.
The non-diegetic sounds used in this clip where the greek background music, the telephone ringing during the end of the clip and then final the narrator speaking.
Synchronous sounds where the phone ringing, the bell, beating the mat and then the botcher's knife's.
Asynchronous sounds where the background music and the narrator.

The traditional greek music in the background during the clip helps to show the viewer regional identity. This is because you can clearly hear the greek instruments through out helping you to imaging/think that this clip is set in a greek village that is still traditional.

Mise-en scene:

Mise- en scene is anything that can be suggested about the characters or where the clip is set.

The fields and mountains suggest that the clip is set in the countryside/village. Also the characters tanned skin, dark hair and dark eyes show that they are greek, this is supported with the language they are speaking. we do not understand as a viewer what they are saying but from regional identity, shot types, sounds and mise-en scene we can imagine what they are saying because the clip leads you to think a certain way. When the boy lets the cow out of the field it makes us think he wants his mums attention. However we then find out that he wanted to be seen as the hero when getting the cow back so he could have his total greek yogurt. Lastly from the mum being in the house we can infer that she is at home cleaning and looking after the house, she's playing the traditional role of a women, in the traditional greek village.

Mise- en scene also shows regional identity as we can identify anything that may suggest something about the person. Normally what we suggest about the characters always leads to the greek life or greek couture and rural greek ways. This helps support regional identity and shows that the clip is set in the greek village.

Editing

A variety of editing types are used to put together each shot to form a clip.

such as:

The simple cut shot used to go from one shot straight to another.

Also there is the eye line match which shows the eye level of a conversation, either speaking or a reaction. This may show a character looking down in one shot and then the next shot being a certain object which is then put together and shows the viewer what they was looking at.

Action match is another editing process. This is a shot of a character making a action and then the shot after will follow them doing the action. This might be a character walking through a door, therefore you can see them opening the door and then walking through it from the other side.

During a conversation shot reverse shot is used which is focussed on one person in the conversation and then moves straight to the other person so you can see their reaction. This shot makes the conversation flow. The characters used will be seen on the shot on either the right or left, each shot will have the character in the same place. For example: if seen of the left in the first shot the character will stay on the left in each shot for the rest of the conversation.

regional identity

The regional identity of a video clip is what you can learn from the people and the scenery that tells you where the clip is set, what region it is in and what region the people are from.

For example:

  • The accent of the local people is different to Doc Martins and they use different types of language. Such as: "bogmin". From this it shows that they are from different regions. Also the way the words are spoken are different to they way Doc Martin would speak, as you can see when he asks dad to use a noun when he says "happens".
  • Doc martin being in a suit implies that he is from the city as everyone else is dressed in farm/village clothing. Therefore we learn from the clothing that the region is the country side. Another reason for believing the clip is set in the country is when the water pipe bursts Doc Martin is stressed about what to do, which is how people from the city are portrayed and dad is relaxed, still eating his sandwich and country people are seen to be relaxed.

sounds in a clip from eastenders

Sounds

There are a variety of sounds used throughout the clip. For example:

  • Theme tune/music at the start and end of the clip - The music is used to represents the drama and help recognize the show.
  • Heathy breathing - Used to show anger in the conversation and the tension between the characters.
  • keys banging together and coat rustling - Makes the character seem to be moving very rushed and heavy handed.
  • door bursting open - shows a forceful and angry reaction.
  • footsteps - seem to be used when leading to a important moment

There are four types of sounds:

  1. non - diegetic: any sounds in the story line, on scene or off
  2. diegetic: sounds or sound effects put in the story line to create a certain effect or mood
  3. synchronous: happens on scene
  4. asynchronous: happens off scene
From this clip I have used there was only one sound that was non - diegetic and asynchronous. This sound was the theme tune used at the start and end. However there was many sounds used that are diegetic and synchronous. For example: keys banging together and coat rustling, heathy breathing, door bursting open and footsteps, these sounds where all used within the story line.

mise - en - scene - scenery

  • The christmas tree and decorations show that it is either christmas day or near the christmas date.
  • Suits worn by the men and dressy clothing worn by the women shows that they are having a party and it is in fact christmas day.
  • Only the two characters (katt & derek) in the front room at the start show that there is tension during the party and is further shown through the clip when people are standing around watching. This also shows that the night has been ruined by this argument/conversation.
  • Being dark outside shows that it is late at night during this scene.
  • The buildings being the same and having a gated garden in the centre shows that its a small area/community/square.

shot types from eastenders clip

shots
At the start of the clip a master shot is used to show where the action will happen. For example in this clip its in the front room. This shot shows the objects in the scene and limits the amount of action you can see.

Not long after over the shoulder shots are used when in conversation. This shows each person speaking and then the others reaction, keeps the conversation flowing. Over the shoulder shot is used to make it seem scene less, this is because both people are kept on the same side each shot(continuity).

During another conversation later on there are more people involved. Therefore a shot reverse shot is used from each character as they speak, this also shows each person speaking and their reaction. This makes the viewer focus on everyones different reactions.

A medium close up is used on a character(max). From this shot it shows the chest to the face, we can see how he reacts to the conversation he is having. However a medium close up doesn't reveal too much as it is leading you up to the important moment.

The establishing shot is used as the scene has changed from being inside the house to outside. This shot is used to establish where further action will happen.

Towards the end of the clip a long shot is used, this shows the whole of the body from head to toe. From this shot we can tell where the character/characters are. For example the characters in this long shot are outside the house.

A close up is then used to show more about the character than the area they are in. From this you learn the characters reaction to what is happening and can relate to how they are feeling from their facial expression.

At the most important part of the clip a extreme close up is used to highlight this specific moment. The other shots used before this have lead you up to this emotional reaction which then creates a bigger impact. This shot allows us to see the close up detail in the reaction of the face.

homework 12th september

select a five minute of a tv drama from youtube and do a textual analysis using shot types, sounds and mise-en-scene. include video clips and pictures.

Mise-en-scène

Mise-em-scene shows the viewer what is included in the scene and what you can infer from it.

For example:

  1. Dark rooms imply the building is an old country cottage.
  2. Small walkways and doors show that its a village.
  3. Doctor Martin being dressed in a suit suggests that he has a different job to the others in the village.
  4. Boxes show that Doc Martin may have only just moved into the cottage.
  5. The police men is introduced hovering, from this we can tell that their is either small crime or no crime as he has spear time to hover the police station.
  6. no cars in the clip and no traffic shows the village has a little amount of people and the village is small, no need for a car.
  7. Doc Martin gives a prescription to a lady he meets in the village town, from this it shows that the village is more relaxed.
  8. country clothing suggests farm workers and the veg shows from a near by farm market.
  9. traditional school also suggests it to be an old village because the school is over looked but people walking by.

shot types and sounds from Doc martin

Shot types:

Master shot used at the start to show where the action will happen and introduced you to the characters involved in this scene. From this shot we can tell which character is most important by the way they are arranged, the tallest shows they're the main character and then the lower level you are the less part you have in that specific scene. A close up was then used on the dad as he started to speak. Then a shot reverse shot was used during their conversation. we can tell who is talking to who from their eye level, if they are looking up it shows they would be talking to the person standing and if looking down it would show them talking to a character lower then them. Another close up was used on the dad to show him looking down because the arrangement had changed of the characters.

Sounds:

The sounds used in Doc Martin was background music through out the clip to show different atmospheres and create a certain mood. The music was up beat and also slow depending on when it was used. There was also a variety of different sounds such as the phone ringing in the house, dog barking before being introduced, cups, pillows, door bell when it's opened, hover in the police station, seagulls that shows where the clip is set and footsteps.

The different types of sounds used in this clip, they are:

  • Diegetic: any sounds used on set within the story line either on scene or off.
  • Non-diegetic: sounds put into the scene to create an affect/mood. they do not happen naturally. For example: sound effects/music
The diegetic sounds in Doc Martin was the cups being placed down, the pillows, water pipe bursting, phone ringing, dog barking, hover and the paper being cut.
The non- diegetic sounds was the music at the start for the introduction and the music throughout the clip used to create different types of moods.

  • Synchronous: sounds that happen on screen
  • Asynchronous: sounds that happen off screen
From Doc Martin the synchronous sounds used was the cups being put onto the side, the pillows, water pipe bursting, phone ringing, dog barking, the hover, and the paper being cut.
The asynchronous sounds used was the music throughout the clip, seagulls and the people calling.

second thoughts on the Doc Martin clip

my second thoughts on the Doc Martin clip is that you can tell Doctor Martin is rushed to get out of the house because he doesn't want to be there. He also seems very stressed by the company that he is in. you can see this from the level and tone of his voice. when the pipe bursts and the wet dog runs into the room Doctor Martin begins to get angry. From the clip i can also tell that he has just moved to the area because he isn't set up for work. people from the area are over welcoming him and he seems to want to be alone. At the start of the clip the lighting is very dark to create an atmosphere. Also a close up is used on the dog and a individual close up is used on each person when in conversation.

initial thoughts on doc Martin clip

my initial thoughts on the clip from Doc Martin was that he was stressed from the problems he was having with the house and the company he was in. The scene at the start of the clip had very dark lighting. This might have been to create a certain atmosphere. From the clip i would think that the show is for middle age and older people because of where the clip was set, in a small village. i could also see that Doc Martin has only just moved to this area because he had not set up his work place.
